How Does It Work?
From an Eastern perspective, acupuncture works by allowing the body to heal itself through enabling the free flow of energy within the “meridians” of the body, which are energy pathways described in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In order for the body to function at its optimal level, energy must flow freely and smoothly without obstructions. The blockage of the flow of energy will result in pain and discomfort.
From a Western approach, inserting acupuncture needles into specific points on the body stimulates an increase of blood, lymphatic and nerve flow into the area. Fatigue, inflammation, and soreness are all diminished with this increase. The micro-trauma induced by inserting an acupuncture needle also introduces anti- inflammatory agents into the area, initializing a healing effect on that tissue. Acupuncture catalyzes the healing process, and decreases pain and inflammation without the harmful side effects of pharmaceutical drugs.
